The Most Common Questions and Concerns About Breast Implants

Breast Implants

Breast Implants

Why has breast augmentation been one of the most popular plastic surgical procedures for decades? This surgery can help you achieve larger, perkier breasts that flatter your overall figure. Most augmentations achieve this with silicone or saline breast implants, but the surgery may also be performed with fat transfer.

Soler Cosmetic Plastic Surgery offers breast augmentation with implants. We work with clients in the Tampa, FL, area and surrounding cities. Find out more about breast implants and the enhancement process with these common questions and answers.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Also known as breast enlargement, breast augmentation is a plastic surgical procedure that aims to increase breast size. Breast augmentation also enhances the shape of the breasts, making them appear to be perkier and more youthful.

How Are Saline Implants Different from Silicone?

Most breast augmentation surgeries are performed using implants. The two standard types of implants are saline and silicone. Saline implants are made with a silicone shell, which is filled with a saline solution after being placed under the skin. Silicone breast implants are made completely of silicone and placed under the skin as a whole implant.

Which Type of Implant Is Right for Me?

One of the biggest concerns patients have is the type of implant they will choose for their breast enlargement. You should consider factors like appearance, feel, and size before you decide which implant is best for you.

If you are looking for the most natural appearance and feel, silicone implants are a better option. Silicone feels more like real breast tissue, and these implants have a more natural-looking shape.

Some body types are better suited for saline implants. These implants can be inserted with a smaller incision, after which they are injected with saline. Saline implants tend to look rounder than silicone implants.

The only way to determine which type of implant is the best fit for you is by having a consultation appointment with a plastic surgeon. By discussing your aesthetic goals, we can confirm which type of implant is the better option.

What Is Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer?

Breast augmentation with fat transfer is a newer type of breast enlargement. This procedure uses your own body fat to increase the volume of your breasts.

First, liposuction is used to harvest fat from a specific problem area. This fat is then processed and transferred to the breast to create a larger size. Breast augmentation with fat transfer is a good option for patients who want a natural enlargement without implants.

How Long Does a Breast Augmentation Take?

The duration of your breast augmentation surgery will depend on your unique needs. Most breast augmentations take anywhere from one to three hours to complete.

Where Are the Incisions Made During a Breast Enlargement?

Incisions can be made in various areas during a breast augmentation, but they are most often made in the armpit area or in the crease under the breast.

Incisions in the armpit area are typically used for saline implants. A silicone shell can be inserted through this incision, and the saline solution can then be injected into the empty implant. Incisions in the crease of the breast are often used to place whole silicone implants under the skin.

What Is Breast Augmentation Recovery Like?

After a breast augmentation, you may need to remain in a plastic surgery aftercare center for monitoring. Many patients return home the same day as their procedure. If not, you will likely return home the next day.

You will be sent home with compression bandages around your breasts. These provide extra support and reduce swelling during the initial days of your recovery. The bandages are usually removed after about a week. Your sutures will be removed at the same time.

We recommend that you wear a supportive undergarment for about four to eight weeks following your surgery. A quality sports bra is a simple way to do this.

For about six to eight weeks after surgery, you will need to avoid strenuous exercise, sports, or any other activities that could cause trauma to the breasts. Do not lay directly on your chest or do anything that applies pressure to the chest. Other than this, you can resume most of your normal activities about one week after treatment.

Will My Breast Implants Change over Time?

Your breast implants will not change in shape or size, but the area surrounding them can change over time. Aging can cause the skin on your breasts to become loose and wrinkled. This may make your breasts appear to sag or change position on your chest. When this occurs, a breast lift procedure can restore your breasts to a more flattering position.

Weight gain can also change the way that your breast implants look. Significant weight gain will make the entire breast appear much larger and may change the shape of your breasts. To maintain the appearance of your breast implants, we recommend staying within range of your healthy body weight.
