Scars form as part of your body’s wound-healing process. Scars are like the body’s glue, adhering the skin after an injury or wound to the skin. Scars are part of the normal healing process and both men and woman alike deal with these marks. There is really no way to remove a scar because if you did you would be left with a hole or separation in your skin. However, Dr. Soler can help diminish the appearance of the scar so it is not as prominent or noticeable. Dr. Soler serves patients in Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg and all the surrounding areas of Southwest FL.
How is scar reduction performed?
Dr. Soler performs laser treatments to help reduce the appearance of scars on the skin. Scar removal or reduction can be accomplished through laser techniques to reduce the appearance of several types of scars, including:
- Keloid Scarring: Reddish-purple scars, usually firm and raised. These scars extend beyond the initial wound area and build over time.
- Hypertrophic Scarring: Firm, raised, pink scars. These scars remain within the area of the wound and tend to fade over time.
- Atrophic Scarring: Small pockets in the skin that can result from skin conditions such as acne.
- Scar Contractures: Deep scars that form after a burn. These scars can tighten and affect movement and flexibility.
- Stretch Mark Scars: Raised red or pink scars that lighten over time and become silvery or white. These scars form from the skin being stretched beyond the limits of its elasticity.
Laser treatments are an effective way to deal with scar reduction. Lasers are a non-invasive and non-surgical way to improve the appearance of scars on your skin. Laser treatments help to lighten the marks and is performed in the office with no downtime. Patients are prescribed an EMLA cream to numb the treatment area. The pulsed laser heats the skin and stimulates the production of collagen, which fills skin imperfections and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Usually, the area treated is covered in ointment and healing is complete within a week or two. Slight redness or pink color may remain for about a month, but can last up to 6 months.
Scar removal/reduction treatment with laser therapy can help you get the clearer, smoother skin you desire. Four to six treatments over a period of two months is usually enough to diminish the scars completely and can restore a rejuvenated feel and texture to the skin. The laser scar treatment works on many skin types, including very pale or very dark skin, but may not be appropriate for everyone. It is important to schedule a consultation with Dr. Soler and discuss your goals. He will create a customized plan for you based on your unique needs.
